Sunday, November 21st, Old Westbury, New York - The
popularity and fame of the NYC Metro (NYAROC) Alfa Romeo Owners Club weekly
breakfast get together has gone global. Every Sunday morning at 8:00am a loyal
group of 8 to 15 dedicated Alfisti meet at the Seacrest Diner in Old Westbury
to consume all sorts of breakfasts with lots of coffee and talk about
all things Alfa. What started three years ago as an excuse to drive our
Alfas on beautiful Sunday mornings during the spring and summer, developed
into a year round event with a cult like following.
So you can imagine how excited we were when Darren Ward,
a member of the Alfa Romeo Owners Club of Great Britain, from Liverpool,
England, contacted our president, George "GT" Linton indicating
that he was going to be on vacation in New York City and would love to join us at
breakfast. GT wasted no time in replying and making arrangements to pick him
up at his hotel in NYC on the morning of November 21st. All the Sunday regulars
were in attendance to welcome Darren and, as you might have guessed,
talk Alfa stuff. He is an extremely affable avid Alfisti and clearly
shares our fanaticism for Alfa Romeo. It seems that in the UK, small
4 cylinder performance cars are a necessity and desirable since
gasoline is almost the equivalent of $8.00 per gallon. We were very interested
to hear about all the details of the ground up restoration Darren had done
on his beloved Alfsud. He showed us pictures of his car taken during
the restoration and those from other Alfa events. No one doubted Darren when
he proudly said, "it gets great mileage and is great fun to drive."
Darren was also able to provide a different perspective
on one of our never ending topics of discussion, "will Alfa Romeo ever
return to the US?" Living in a country where you can still buy new Alfas,
he was surprised by how longingly many of us fantasize about buying new Alfas
again. No, we're not fooling ourselves, we understand that it will most
likely never happen, but one of the things we appreciate so much about our
Sunday breakfast meetings is the forum it provides to entertain such pleasant
thoughts. Darren's visit was a great success and we are pleased
to now have an honorary chapter member from Liverpool, England.
